Influencer marketing: choosing the right KOL/KOC
A creator with a large following does not automatically make an audience trust, remember or act. Results emerge when their voice fits the brand story, speaks to the community and appears at the right moment in the campaign.
Many brands pick KOLs purely for large follower counts, then feel let down by low engagement and near-zero conversion. The problem is choosing the wrong person for the wrong goal.
Start from the goal, not the celebrity
Do you need awareness, consideration or conversion? Awareness may need big KOLs; conversion often works better with smaller KOCs who are close and trusted within niche communities.
Judge quality, not just quantity
- Fit between the audience and your target customers
- Real engagement rate and comment quality
- Collaboration history and the influencer's credibility
A good script matters more than the face
An idea and script that hit the insight let even mid and small influencers create viral content. Invest in the idea, don't just pay for followers.
Replace instinct with a creator scorecard
A strong shortlist scores creators across four layers: audience fit, content quality, community health and ability to deliver the brief. Engagement rate is only one signal. Read comments, check ad frequency, observe how creators handle feedback and decide whether the brand can appear naturally in their content world.
Build a creator portfolio by role
- Hero creators create major awareness moments
- Expert creators explain and build credibility
- Community creators spark niche conversation
- KOCs demonstrate the product in real-use contexts
Be strict on the goal, open on the story
A brief should lock mandatory messages, product facts and the desired action without scripting every creator sentence. Strong content preserves the creator's familiar voice while landing the brand at the right moment. Review logic and brand risk without flattening personality.
