Soft-launching a mobile game in Vietnam: A pre-launch testing playbook

A soft launch lets studios test the product, message and user quality before scaling spend. It is a practical way to reduce risk when entering Vietnam.

A game can look polished and run well yet fail at scale because the message is wrong, onboarding is too long or user acquisition attracts the wrong players. A soft launch is a controlled release designed to expose these problems before major spend.

What should a soft launch test?

  • Whether players understand the game in the first 30 seconds
  • Tutorial and onboarding completion
  • D1/D7 retention, CPI and user quality by source
  • Payments, ads and live-ops readiness for the local market

1. Define the audience and test scope

Do not open a soft launch to everyone immediately. Start with a segment defined by genre, device, region or familiarity with games. In Vietnam, account for Android/iOS behavior, network conditions, common devices and how players respond to Vietnamese content.

2. Use a small budget to test creative

Soft-launch creative is not only for buying installs. It tests positioning: do players respond to the fantasy, characters, competition or entertainment value? Test multiple hooks while keeping measurement consistent so cheap traffic is not mistaken for good traffic.

3. Fix onboarding before scaling CPI

If players leave before reaching the core gameplay loop, more budget only accelerates waste. Review recordings, funnels and drop-off points to shorten introductions, clarify actions and reach the fun moment earlier.

4. Set clear go/no-go thresholds

Before launch, agree on thresholds for CPI, retention, crash rate, tutorial completion and payback. Without thresholds, teams can keep spending because the game feels promising even when the data is not strong enough.

Vietnam soft-launch checklist

  • Natural Vietnamese localization with consistent terminology and visuals
  • Separate measurement by Android/iOS, creative and traffic source
  • Test networks, devices, payments and player support
  • Scale only after retention and user quality stabilize
A soft launch is not a smaller launch. It is a learning system that increases the odds of a successful full release.
