Launching a mobile game in Vietnam: the complete checklist from licensing to your first 90 days

Game launches in Vietnam rarely fail because of weak marketing. They fail because licensing wasn't finished, translation missed the context, or nobody was on call for a crisis. This is the full checklist ANBU has put together to support international studios entering this market.

Game launches in Vietnam rarely fall apart because of one bad ad. They fall apart three weeks out, when a team discovers the title isn't licensed yet, the Vietnamese translation misses the gameplay context, or nobody is on call if the server goes down at 11pm. Here is the full checklist ANBU has put together to support international studios entering this market, from licensing and localization through the first 90 days after launch.

Official press events and roadmap announcements establish solid trust and positioning during the pre-launch phase.

Step 1: Lock licensing before you lock a launch date

Online games in Vietnam fall under Decree 147/2024/ND-CP. Depending on whether your title is classified G1, G2, G3 or G4, the licensing or release-confirmation requirements, content review, virtual items and player-data rules all differ, and clearing them can take weeks. Check this before your marketing calendar is locked, not after; otherwise you'll be rewriting creative, messaging or the launch date itself.

  • Confirm the publishing entity in Vietnam and the game's classification (G1 - G4)
  • Review content, imagery, payment mechanics and virtual items against the rules
  • Prepare a player-data and privacy plan
  • Align legal filing timelines with localization, PR and creator schedules

Step 2: Localization means context, not just translation

A grammatically correct translation can still be completely wrong if it doesn't match the gameplay. Skill names, combat terms, in-game notifications and even ad copy need to be checked against a real build, not a text file in isolation. In an RPG like Honkai Impact 3, getting one combat term wrong can make players misread a core mechanic in their very first session.

  • Translate in context, use real screenshots or a build, not isolated strings
  • Run LQA on real devices and the screen sizes Vietnamese players actually use
  • Lock a terminology glossary before translating, not after
  • Track player feedback after launch and keep the glossary updated

Step 3: Lock four workstreams in the 30 days before launch

The final 30 days are not for testing new ideas, they're for tightening what's already decided. These four workstreams need to lock together, because a delay in one drags down the whole launch.

  • Store: metadata, screenshots, video, age rating and tracking links, all double-checked
  • Community: groups, Discord, Vietnamese-language FAQs and a support team already staffed
  • Creators: partner list, briefs, disclosures and a locked posting calendar
  • Measurement: event tracking, dashboard, cohorts and alert thresholds, tested end to end

Step 4: The technical and compliance verification checklist 7 days out

In the final 7 days before server opening, the publishing team needs one last emergency verification pass to catch last-minute failures:

  • Server stress testing: Simulating 3x projected peak concurrency to tune load balancers and cloud auto-scaling policies.
  • End-to-end payment sandbox audits: Verifying all price tiers across iOS IAP, Google Play Billing, and direct web payment gateways.
  • Final build approval window: Securing store review approvals at least 72 hours in advance to eliminate unexpected rejection delays.
  • Support and fanpage readiness: Pre-configuring automated response scripts and live agents for instantaneous launch-hour ticket triage.

Step 5: Launch in risk-managed stages, not all at once

A soft launch exists to test crashes, server load, onboarding, payments and community response before you spend ad budget at scale. Expand only once quality, retention and support capacity clear their thresholds, install count alone should never be the signal to scale.

A good launch isn't the day with the most installs. It's the day the team is sharp enough to spot a problem and fix it before it spreads.

The first 90 days: keep players, don't just bring them in

Split the first 90 days into three clear waves. Days 1 - 30: fix emerging bugs, listen to the community, set safety rules. Days 31 - 60: run small events, encourage player-made content, close the feedback loop. Days 61 - 90: give creators more room and build a recurring activity calendar once the data shows retention has stabilized. Don't skip ahead to the last wave while the first one is still unfinished.

How ANBU works alongside you

ANBU doesn't just hand you a checklist and walk away. For international studios, we're ready to stay involved from the legal-readiness assessment through localization and creator coordination to community operations and measurement across those first 90 days, one team, one timeline, instead of scattered vendors who each know only their own piece.

If you're preparing to bring a game into Vietnam and aren't sure where you stand, send ANBU your product details and target timeline. We'll walk through every item on this list with you before you lock a launch date.
